Yes. Under the Electrical Safety Act 2002 (Qld), all electrical work in Queensland must be performed by a licensed electrician. This includes work that seems simple like swapping a power point, installing a light fitting or wiring a ceiling fan. Unlicensed electrical work is illegal, voids your home insurance and puts your family at risk. Penalties for unlicensed work can exceed $40,000 for individuals.

Yes. Every notifiable electrical job we complete receives a Certificate of Electrical Safety as required under Queensland electrical safety legislation. This certificate is lodged with the Electrical Safety Office and confirms the work meets AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules). You receive a copy for your records. This is important for insurance claims, property sales and rental compliance.

A standard residential switchboard upgrade takes between two and four hours depending on the condition of the existing wiring and the number of circuits. The power will be off during the changeover but we aim to keep the outage as short as possible. If the existing wiring needs repairs or additional circuits are required, the job may take longer. We will let you know the expected timeframe in your quote.

A circuit breaker protects your wiring from overloading and short circuits. It stops the wire from overheating and causing a fire. A safety switch (also called an RCD) protects people. It detects current leaking through a person’s body and cuts the power in milliseconds to prevent electrocution. Queensland law requires safety switches on all power point circuits and lighting circuits in domestic dwellings. You need both, and they do completely different jobs.

Yes. Under the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 (Qld), all Queensland homes must have safety switches installed on all power point circuits. If your home was built before 1992 it may still have an old fuse board with no safety switch protection at all. If you are selling or leasing a property, a safety switch on power circuits is mandatory. We recommend safety switches on lighting circuits as well for full protection.

Common signs include ceramic fuses instead of modern circuit breakers, frequent tripping, a burning smell near the board, scorch marks on the panel, flickering lights when appliances turn on and a board that cannot support new additions like air conditioning or EV chargers. If your home was built before 2000 and still has the original switchboard, it is almost certainly due for an upgrade to meet current safety standards.

First check whether your neighbours have lost power too. If they have, it is likely an Energex network outage and you can check their website or call 13 62 62. If the outage is only at your property, check your switchboard for tripped safety switches or circuit breakers. Reset them once. If they trip again immediately, do not keep resetting. Call a licensed electrician because a repeated trip usually indicates a fault that needs professional diagnosis. Do not touch any wiring or open the switchboard cover.
