You probably need surge protection if...

No surge protector on your switchboard

Your switchboard has circuit breakers and safety switches but no surge protection device (SPD) installed. Circuit breakers and safety switches do not protect against voltage spikes. Without an SPD a single lightning strike near your property or a grid surge can send thousands of volts through your wiring and into every appliance plugged in.

You have expensive electronics

Your home has computers, gaming systems, smart TVs, home theatre equipment, security cameras or a home office setup worth thousands of dollars. These devices contain sensitive electronics that are easily damaged by voltage spikes as small as a few hundred volts above normal.

Brisbane storm season

You live in Brisbane. South East Queensland experiences some of the highest lightning strike density in Australia, especially between October and March. Every storm season homes across Brisbane lose appliances, modems, air conditioning control boards and pool equipment to power surges caused by nearby lightning strikes.

Solar, battery or EV charger installed

You have solar panels, a battery system or an EV charger connected to your switchboard. These systems are expensive to replace and contain sensitive inverters and control boards that are vulnerable to surge damage. Protecting your investment with switchboard mounted surge protection is essential.

Four reasons Brisbane locals install surge protection.

A surge protection device costs a fraction of what it protects. One lightning strike can destroy more in appliances than the surge protector costs to install.

Protect everything in your home at once

A switchboard mounted surge protector sits at the entry point of your electrical system and catches voltage spikes before they reach any circuit in your home. Every power point, every light, every hardwired appliance is protected from a single device at the board. Combined with a modern switchboard your entire electrical system is covered.

Prevent costly appliance replacement

A single surge can destroy your fridge compressor, air conditioning control board, washing machine motherboard, modem, computer and TV simultaneously. Replacing all of that costs thousands. A surge protector installed at the switchboard prevents the damage from ever reaching your appliances.

Protect solar and battery investments

Solar inverters and battery management systems are some of the most expensive and surge-sensitive components in a modern home. A lightning strike that damages your inverter can cost $2,000 to $5,000 to replace and leave your solar system offline for weeks. Surge protection at the switchboard keeps your solar investment safe.

Brisbane's storm exposure

Brisbane sits in one of the most lightning-active regions in Australia. Between October and March, severe thunderstorms are a regular occurrence across the Southside. Even lightning that strikes nearby without hitting your property directly can induce voltage spikes through the power grid. Surge protection is not optional in Brisbane, it is essential. Having safety switches protects people but only surge protection protects your equipment.

What is included in every Surge Protection Installation Brisbane.

Every Surge Protection Installation Brisbane homeowners book is completed to current AS/NZS 3000 standards and includes all of the following. No surcharges, no upsells on the day.

Quality surge protection devices

We install Type 2 and Type 1 surge protection devices from trusted brands including Clipsal, Hager and Fusion. All devices meet IEC 61643-11 standards with green status indicator windows so you can see at a glance that protection is active.

Status indicator verification

Every surge protector we install has a visual status indicator that shows green when protection is active. We verify the indicator is showing correct status after installation so you know it is working from day one.

Installed at the switchboard

The surge protector is mounted inside your switchboard on a dedicated circuit breaker. This is the most effective location because it catches voltage spikes at the entry point before they reach any circuit in your home.

Professional install by licensed electrician

Anthony does the work personally. Not an apprentice. Not a subbie. Not a call centre dispatch. Surge protection installation must be carried out by a licensed electrician.

Correct earth bonding

Surge protection only works with a solid earth connection. We verify your earth system is in good condition and meets the requirements for effective surge diversion. If your earthing needs attention we address it as part of the installation.

Workmanship warranty included

Labour warranty on the install plus full manufacturer warranty on the surge protection device and all components fitted.

"I install surge protection on every switchboard upgrade I do because I know what Brisbane storms can do to a home's electronics. Proper device, proper earth, proper installation. If your earthing is not up to scratch I will fix it first because a surge protector without a good earth is just a box on the wall doing nothing."

Surge Protection Installation Brisbane questions locals ask.

Straight answers on cost, how it works, storm protection and what is actually involved.

A single phase surge protector starts from $350 ex GST. Three phase protection starts from $550. A full multi-level package with Type 1 and Type 2 protection starts from $900. Anthony quotes on site with a fixed price in writing before any work begins.

A power board surge protector only protects the devices plugged into that specific board. A switchboard mounted surge protector sits at the entry point of your entire electrical system and protects every circuit in your home at once. Switchboard protection is far more effective because it catches the spike before it reaches any wiring in your walls.

A Type 2 surge protector handles indirect lightning strikes and grid surges which account for the vast majority of surge events. For direct lightning strike protection a Type 1 lightning current arrester installed at the meter board is needed in addition to the Type 2 at the switchboard. The full multi-level package covers both scenarios.

Quality surge protectors have a green status indicator window on the front. If the indicator is green protection is active. If it turns red or goes blank the device has absorbed a major surge and needs replacing. Anthony will show you where to check after installation.

Yes. Safety switches and surge protectors do completely different jobs. A safety switch protects people from electrocution by detecting current leaking to earth. A surge protector protects your appliances and electronics from voltage spikes. You need both for a properly protected home.

Yes. Every switchboard upgrade by SEQ Sparky includes surge protection as standard. If your switchboard was upgraded by someone else and does not have surge protection fitted, Anthony can add it as a standalone installation.

A surge protector does not wear out under normal conditions. It only degrades when it absorbs a significant surge event. After a major surge the status indicator will change from green to red indicating the device needs replacing. In Brisbane with regular storm activity we recommend checking the indicator every few months during storm season.

Yes. Solar inverters are one of the most common casualties of power surges in Brisbane. A surge protector at the switchboard catches voltage spikes before they reach your inverter. For solar systems we also recommend DC side surge protection at the inverter itself for complete coverage.

Type 1 is a lightning current arrester designed to handle direct lightning strikes. It is installed at the meter board or main switchboard. Type 2 is a surge protector designed to handle indirect surges and grid spikes. It is installed at the main switchboard. For maximum protection both types are installed together in a multi-level configuration.

Yes. Three phase switchboards need a three phase surge protector that covers all three phases and the neutral. A single phase surge protector will not protect the other two phases. We install four pole surge protection devices on all three phase boards.
