A switchboard mounted surge protector sits at the entry point of your entire electrical system and protects every circuit in your home at once. Switchboard protection is far more effective because it catches the spike before it reaches any wiring in your walls.
A Type 2 surge protector handles indirect lightning strikes and grid surges which account for the vast majority of surge events. For direct lightning strike protection a Type 1 lightning current arrester installed at the meter board is needed in addition to the Type 2 at the switchboard. Quality surge protectors have a green status indicator window on the front. If the indicator is green protection is active. If it turns red or goes blank the device has absorbed a major surge and needs replacing. Anthony will show you where to check after installation.
Yes. Safety switches and surge protectors do completely different jobs. A safety switch protects people from electrocution by detecting current leaking to earth. A surge protector protects your appliances and electronics from voltage spikes. You need both for a properly protected home.
Yes. Every switchboard upgrade by SEQ Sparky includes surge protection as standard. If your switchboard was upgraded by someone else and does not have surge protection fitted, Anthony can add it as a standalone installation.
A surge protector does not wear out under normal conditions. It only degrades when it absorbs a significant surge event. After a major surge the status indicator will change from green to red indicating the device needs replacing. In Brisbane with regular storm activity we recommend checking the indicator every few months during storm season.

Type 1 is a lightning current arrester designed to handle direct lightning strikes. It is installed at the meter board or main switchboard. Type 2 is a surge protector designed to handle indirect surges and grid spikes. It is installed at the main switchboard. For maximum protection both types are installed together in a multi-level configuration.
Yes. Three phase switchboards need a three phase surge protector that covers all three phases and the neutral. A single phase surge protector will not protect the other two phases. We install four pole surge protection devices on all three phase boards.
