How Long Does a Switchboard Upgrade Take in Brisbane? 2026 Timeline

QUICK ANSWER
A standard Brisbane single-phase residential switchboard upgrade takes one full day on site, with a total elapsed time of 5 to 10 days from booking to final Electrical Safety Certificate. Three-phase upgrades take 7 to 14 days total. Energex EWR processing is the main timing driver.

On-site sequence: Isolation and lockout-tagout. Old board stripped including asbestos containment if present. New enclosure mounted. Busbar, main switch, RCBO row built. Cables terminated. Energex meter swap mid-afternoon. Full test sheet (loop impedance, RCD trip, insulation resistance, earth continuity). Power back on. Labels applied. Old board removed.
Day 9 to 10: Compliance certificate
Within 48 hours of work complete
The Electrical Safety Certificate is lodged with the Queensland Electrical Safety Office. A PDF copy emails to you for your home insurance file. The EWR completion notification goes to Energex. Done.

Three-phase upgrade timeline differences
If you are upgrading from single-phase to three-phase supply (common in Loganholme, Springwood and Beenleigh homes adding ducted aircon, EV chargers or battery storage), add the following to the timeline above.
- +3 to 5 days on the Energex EWR stage if a network supply upgrade is needed
- +0 days on the on-site day – still finishes in one day if the supply already arrives three-phase
- +1 to 2 days if a CT metering board is required (commercial over 100 amps per phase)
Total three-phase upgrade timeline 7 to 14 days. Full pricing detail in our three-phase power Brisbane guide.

What slows the upgrade down
- Asbestos backing panel requires Class A containment – adds 1 to 2 hours to the on-site day
- Supply size upgrade from 63 to 100 amp requires Energex site visit – adds 5 to 10 days elapsed
- Multi-tenancy building needs staged isolation per tenancy – work split across 2 to 4 days
- Asbestos disposal certificate requires licensed waste facility booking – adds 1 to 2 days to paperwork
- Energex meter swap backlog in busy storm season can delay 1 week
How to prep for upgrade day
- Run the fridge and freezer cold the night before – cold mass holds temperature for 8 hours easily
- Charge your phone, laptop and any battery banks the night before
- Plan to work from a cafe or the office on upgrade day if you work from home
- Move any sensitive equipment (medical, server, server-grade NAS) away from circuit you do not want re-energised first
- Leave a clear path to the meter box – 2 metres clearance for ladders and tools
- Park your car off the driveway in case the SEQ Sparky van needs the spot

Switchboard upgrade timeline FAQ
How long is the power off during a Brisbane switchboard upgrade?
Approximately 6 hours for a standard single-phase upgrade, from 8:30am to around 3pm. Three-phase upgrades can be slightly longer. The fridge and freezer hold temperature easily over that period if run cold the night before.
Do I need to be home during the switchboard upgrade?
Yes for the start and finish. Anthony needs you to confirm the scope at 8am and sign off at the end of the day. The middle 5 hours you can work from a cafe, the office or run errands.
What if the switchboard upgrade runs over time?
Rare but it happens. If Energex meter swap runs late or an asbestos panel takes longer than expected, power is restored using temporary jumpers to keep the fridge running overnight and the rest of the work finishes the next morning. No extra cost.
How much does a Brisbane switchboard upgrade cost in 2026?
Single-phase residential RCBO upgrade $1,800 to $3,200 fitted. Three-phase $3,500 to $6,500 fitted. Both include Energex EWR and Electrical Safety Certificate.
When do I receive the Electrical Safety Certificate after the upgrade?
Within 48 hours of work complete. The ESC is lodged with the Queensland Electrical Safety Office and a PDF copy emails to you the same day for your home insurance file.
