RCD vs RCBO: which one do you actually need
There are two devices that get called “safety switches” in everyday conversation and they are not the same thing.
- RCD (Residual Current Device). Protects one or more circuits from earth leakage. If a faulty appliance leaks current to ground, the RCD trips in under 40 milliseconds and breaks the circuit. Cheaper, older technology, still legal but not ideal.
- RCBO (Residual Current Breaker with Overload). Same earth leakage protection plus circuit breaker protection in a single device. One per circuit. If a fault occurs on the kitchen circuit, only the kitchen trips, not half the house. Modern standard.
- Combined RCD plus circuit breakers. The old approach was one RCD protecting four or five circuit breakers. When the RCD trips, every circuit on that bank goes dark. This is why so many older Brisbane homes lose half the lights and a fridge any time the iron has a moment.

Under the Queensland Electrical Safety Regulation, every residential property must have safety switch protection on all power and lighting circuits. The requirement is triggered by:
- Any work on the switchboard. An upgrade, repair or even a single new circuit triggers a board wide review. If safety switches are not present, they must be added.
- Sale of a residential property. The seller must provide a Form 16 compliance statement and safety switches must be present on all final subcircuits.
- Rental properties. Landlords must ensure RCD protection on power circuits as a minimum. Lighting circuit protection is best practice and increasingly required by insurers.
- New builds and major renovations. AS NZS 3000 wiring rules require RCD protection on every final subcircuit.

Signs your safety switches need replacing or adding
1. You have ceramic fuses, not breakers

2. The board has breakers but no test button
Every safety switch has a clearly marked “TEST” button. If none of the devices in your board has a test button, you have circuit breakers only, not safety switches. They protect against overload, not earth leakage.
3. Safety switches do not trip when you press TEST
Press the test button monthly. If it does not snap to the OFF position immediately, the device has failed. Replace it. The internal mechanism wears out from heat cycling, moisture and time.
4. Repeated nuisance tripping in wet weather
Random trips that come back after rain point to moisture tracking through degraded insulation. The safety switch is doing its job. The underlying cause needs fixing, often by partial rewiring of the affected circuit.
5. You can smell burning from the switchboard
A burning bakelite smell from the board itself is overheating from loose connections or worn busbars. Turn the main switch off and call an electrician same day. Often signals a need for full board replacement.

Insurance and Form A compliance: why the paperwork matters
Every safety switch install in Queensland legally requires a Certificate of Testing and Compliance (Form A) from the licensed contractor who did the work. This document is your proof to:
- Insurers if you ever claim for fire, electrocution or appliance damage
- Future buyers and their building inspectors
- Tenants and rental agencies
